1. Microsoft Bans Employees From Using DeepSeek, Despite Hosting It On Azure20:33[-/+]
Категория(?)  Автор(?)

Microsoft has taken a firm stance against the use of the Chinese AI tool DeepSeek within its organization, officially banning employees from using the technology in workplace settings or on corporate-issued devices. The decision is rooted in concerns over data security and potential risks linked to foreign-developed artificial intelligence platforms, particularly those originating from China.

Brad Smith, president of Microsoft, confirmed the ban and stated that DeepSeek would not be made available on the Microsoft Store. The reasoning behind this is to avoid not only any security vulnerabilities but also to discourage what he referred to as “Chinese propaganda” associated with the tool’s usage. Smith made these remarks during a recent U.S. Senate hearing, where he voiced strong support for U.S. government efforts—especially those backed by the Trump administration—to restrict the use of Chinese-developed AI systems on federal networks and devices.

Microsoft’s Vice Chair and President, Brad Smith

Despite this restrictive internal policy, Microsoft has made the DeepSeek R1 model accessible through its Azure AI Foundry platform. This move has drawn attention due to its apparent contradiction with the company’s internal ban. However, Microsoft has clarified that DeepSeek is an open-source AI model, which allows it to be hosted on private servers without requiring any communication with Chinese-based infrastructure. This key distinction significantly reduces the security risks often associated with foreign AI systems, such as data leakage or unauthorized access.

When asked about this inconsistency, Smith explained that Microsoft had implemented several modifications to the DeepSeek model before making it available via Azure. According to him, these “cuts” were necessary to eliminate “harmful side effects,” thereby enabling a more secure and controlled version of the AI to be offered to developers and researchers. This approach reflects Microsoft’s attempt to balance access to open-source innovation with the need to maintain strict cybersecurity standards.

In summary, Microsoft’s dual approach to DeepSeek—banning its use internally while still providing a curated version on Azure—demonstrates the complexities of navigating AI development in a global and politically sensitive landscape. The company appears committed to supporting innovation, including tools developed outside the U.S., but only under conditions that ensure data protection and compliance with national security priorities. This case highlights broader tensions between open-source accessibility and geopolitical caution in the evolving world of artificial intelligence.

3. Android 16 Bringing Native Desktop Mode To Rival Samsung DeXЧт, 08 мая[-/+]
Категория(?)  Автор(?)

With smartphones getting more powerful each and every generation, it makes sense to harness that power and put it to good use maybe even as a personal computer, and the folks at Mountain View are also thinking about that, at least accordning to this latest piece of news.

Google is actively developing a native desktop mode for Android, aiming to provide an integrated alternative to Samsung DeX. This upcoming feature, hidden within the code of Android 16, was recently tested by Android Authority, which managed to activate it for the first time.

While the mode appears to be in an advanced stage of development, it is not yet complete. Its official rollout could happen in a future quarterly update for Android 16 or possibly only with the release of Android 17.

What sets this native desktop mode apart is its fully functional interface, which resembles Samsung DeX but offers the distinct advantage of being built directly into the Android operating system. This means it could be accessible to a much wider range of Android devices, rather than being limited to Samsung hardware.

During early testing, the interface revealed several desktop-like elements, including a taskbar, status bar, and a vertical app drawer designed for use on horizontally oriented screens, much like traditional computer monitors.

The mode already supports key multitasking features such as pinning favorite apps, switching between tasks, and opening applications in free-floating, resizable windows. These capabilities echo the freeform window mode introduced on Android tablets with version 15, now adapted for a broader desktop experience.

One of the most notable enhancements is the ability to manage multiple displays. Users will be able to utilize the phone’s screen as a secondary display, allowing them to move and position content between the external monitor and the phone in a way similar to what is found in desktop operating systems like Windows.

Although Google has yet to officially announce the feature, it is likely that the company will introduce it soon, especially given the upcoming major events scheduled for May. The development of this desktop mode also aligns with Google’s broader strategy to unify Android and ChromeOS.

For this convergence to succeed, Android must evolve to better support productivity-focused interfaces, and this desktop mode is a significant step in that direction.

Still hidden from public view, the Android native desktop mode remains in development. However, its current level of polish suggests that it has the potential to change how Android smartphones are used in work and productivity contexts. By making desktop-like functionality available to all compatible devices, Google could democratize a feature that has so far been exclusive to select manufacturers.

8. Soviet Kosmos 482 Spacecraft Set For Uncontrolled ReentryСб, 03 мая[-/+]
Категория(?)  Автор(?)

A fragment of a long-abandoned Soviet spacecraft is expected to make an uncontrolled reentry into Earth’s atmosphere around May 10, 2025. The object is the descent module from Kosmos 482, a space probe launched in 1972 as part of the Soviet Union’s ambitious Venera program, which aimed to explore the surface of Venus.

However, due to a malfunction in the upper stage of the Soyuz rocket during launch, Kosmos 482 failed to achieve the necessary velocity to escape Earth’s gravity. Instead of heading toward Venus, it was trapped in an elliptical orbit around Earth.

The probe, a twin of the successful Venera 8 spacecraft, was built to withstand the extreme conditions of Venus’s atmosphere, including high temperatures and pressures.

Nave espacial Venera 8” by Lavochkin / Roscosmos is marked with CC0 1.0.

Venera 8 ultimately landed on Venus and transmitted data for just over 50 minutes before being destroyed by the planet’s harsh environment. Kosmos 482, by contrast, split into two major parts after its failed mission: the main spacecraft body, which reentered Earth’s atmosphere and disintegrated in 1981, and the highly durable descent module, which has remained in orbit for more than five decades.

Now, after 53 years in space, this 495-kilogram (1,091-pound), one-meter-wide descent module is predicted to reenter Earth’s atmosphere at a speed of around 242 kilometers per hour (150 mph). According to Marco Langbroek, a lecturer in space situational awareness at Delft Technical University, the module’s reinforced design may allow it to survive reentry largely intact, posing a non-zero impact risk. He likens the potential danger to that of a small meteorite striking Earth.

Due to its orbital inclination of 52 degrees, the module could land anywhere between 52°N and 52°S latitude. This wide band covers large portions of the Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. However, with oceans covering over 70% of the planet’s surface, the most probable outcome is a splashdown in water. Still, until its descent path becomes clearer, the precise time and location of impact remain uncertain.

Satellite trackers and space situational awareness experts are closely monitoring the object’s trajectory. More accurate reentry predictions will emerge as the spacecraft continues its slow descent. The case underscores the long-lasting presence of space debris and the occasional risks posed by relics from the early era of space exploration.

10. Fortnite Returning To US App Store After Epic Games Wins Legal Battle Against AppleПт, 02 мая[-/+]
Категория(?)  Автор(?)

After several years of legal disputes, Fortnite is set to return to the U.S. App Store next week. The decision follows a recent court ruling in favor of Epic Games, ending a long-standing standoff between the game developer and Apple over in-app payment systems and platform policies.

The dispute began in August 2020, when Apple removed Fortnite from the App Store. This action came after Epic Games introduced its own direct payment system within the app, bypassing Apple’s 30% commission fee—something Apple considers a violation of its App Store policies. Since then, the two companies have been locked in a legal battle, with significant developments on both sides over the years.

On April 30, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney announced on X (formerly Twitter) that Fortnite will return to the U.S. App Store following a legal victory in a California court. The court found that Apple had acted in bad faith and engaged in anticompetitive behavior, particularly in relation to how it handles online transactions on its platform.

We will return Fortnite to the US iOS App Store next week.

Epic puts forth a peace proposal: If Apple extends the court's friction-free, Apple-tax-free framework worldwide, we'll return Fortnite to the App Store worldwide and drop current and future litigation on the topic. https://t.co/bIRTePm0Tv

— Tim Sweeney (@TimSweeneyEpic) April 30, 2025

The court order stated: “For the reasons set forth herein, the Court finds that Apple willfully violated the injunction issued by this Court in 2021, which aims to restrict and prohibit Apple’s anticompetitive pricing and conduct. Apple’s continued efforts to interfere with competition will not be tolerated.”

This marks a significant shift in a legal saga that began with Apple securing a partial win in 2021. Now, the latest decision favors Epic Games, though both companies may still revisit the courtroom as additional proceedings unfold.

Earlier this year, Epic had already signaled a comeback, stating in March that Fortnite would return to iOS in July. However, with this new ruling, the timeline has been moved forward, and US iOS users can expect the game to reappear as early as next week.

This decision could have broader implications for App Store policies and developer rights, as it challenges Apple’s long-standing control over in-app payments and opens the door for more flexible models going forward.

11. Flappy Bird Is Back! After 10 Years, It Brings A New Game ExperienceЧт, 01 мая[-/+]
Категория(?)  Автор(?)

What better way of enjoying your free time than having fun with silly games, like Flappy Bird, which is making a comeback on Android over ten years after its original release and subsequent removal.

This revival is being handled by the Epic Games Store, which will distribute the game on Google’s mobile platform. A short preview trailer was released, offering glimpses of new features coming with this version.

The trailer, just over 30 seconds long, reintroduces the iconic bird escaping a cage and flying through obstacle-filled environments, showcasing the same addictive gameplay that captivated millions a decade ago. Notably, the new version introduces additional stages, providing fresh challenges for returning and new players alike.

Visual updates are also evident, with redesigned elements enhancing the game’s look. Alongside the traditional Classic mode, a new Quest mode has been added, offering a variation in gameplay and objectives. Importantly, the developers have clarified that this release has no relation to cryptocurrency mining—an issue associated with some apps in recent years.

According to a press statement from the development team, monetization in this version follows standard mobile game practices, including ads and in-app purchases such as cosmetic skins. It’s worth mentioning that Dong Nguyen, the original creator of Flappy Bird, is not involved in this new iteration.

Originally launched over a decade ago, Flappy Bird became a viral hit due to its simple yet difficult gameplay. At its peak, it reportedly generated $50,000 per day through ad revenue. However, in February 2014, Nguyen removed the game from app stores, citing overwhelming stress and saying he “couldn’t take it anymore.”

Since its removal, the game has been cloned extensively, and even included as an Easter egg in Android 5.0 Lollipop. Now, Flappy Bird returns with updates designed to appeal to both nostalgic fans and new players in today’s mobile gaming landscape.

12. Duolingo Will Replace Its Workforce By AI For Some TasksСр, 30 апр[-/+]
Категория(?)  Автор(?)

Duolingo has officially announced a major shift towards becoming an AI-first company. CEO Luis von Ahn stated that AI is already reshaping work processes and emphasized the importance of adapting quickly. Drawing parallels to Duolingo’s early success with a mobile-first strategy in 2012, von Ahn noted that betting early on emerging platforms has been key to the company’s growth. With AI now seen as the next major shift, Duolingo is positioning itself to lead rather than follow.

According to the announcement, AI will not simply improve efficiency; it is central to fulfilling Duolingo’s mission of providing scalable, high-quality education. The company highlighted how AI has already enhanced its operations by replacing a previously slow, manual content creation process. Without AI, expanding their educational content to reach more learners would take decades. AI is also enabling new features, such as Video Call, bringing the company closer to offering tutoring experiences comparable to the best human instructors.

As part of this transition, Duolingo will gradually reduce reliance on contract workers for tasks that AI can handle. In addition, proficiency with AI tools will become a criterion in hiring decisions and performance reviews. Headcount increases will only be approved when automation is not a viable alternative, and most teams will launch initiatives to rethink and redesign their workflows around AI capabilities.

Despite these changes, Duolingo reassured its employees that the move is not about replacing its workforce but about empowering it. The goal is to eliminate bottlenecks and free employees from repetitive tasks so they can focus on creative problem-solving and innovation. The company committed to offering additional training, mentorship, and AI-focused tools to support employees during the transition.

Leadership acknowledged that while change can be intimidating, moving swiftly to adopt AI will better position Duolingo to achieve its goals and ensure employees remain ahead of industry trends. Although some risks and imperfections are expected, Duolingo prefers to act decisively rather than waiting for the technology to mature fully. The overall message emphasizes optimism: the integration of AI is intended to strengthen the company’s mission and enhance the work experience for its current team members.

14. Microsoft Launches Windows Recall And New AI Features For Copilot+ PCsВт, 29 апр[-/+]
Категория(?)  Автор(?)

After months of delays and privacy-related controversy, Microsoft has officially started rolling out Windows Recall for Copilot+ PCs. The feature is part of the April 2025 update and will be gradually made available to devices running Snapdragon, Intel, and AMD processors.

Originally introduced in May 2024, Windows Recall faced immediate criticism over privacy concerns, specifically regarding how user data was stored locally. Due to the backlash, Microsoft delayed the launch to strengthen the feature’s security and privacy measures.

Windows Recall works by taking encrypted snapshots of the user’s on-screen activities and saving them locally. These snapshots allow users to easily retrieve past information, creating a detailed history of their activity. Users have control over what is recorded, with options to exclude specific apps and websites or to manually delete stored data.

Access to the saved snapshots requires authentication through Windows Hello, using facial recognition, fingerprint, or PIN, ensuring that the information remains secure and accessible only to the device owner.

Along with Recall, Microsoft is introducing two additional AI-driven features to Copilot+ PCs. The first is Click To Do, an enhancement built on top of Recall. Click To Do adds an AI overlay to the system, allowing users to interact with on-screen content quickly by pressing the Windows key and clicking with the mouse. This tool makes it easier to edit and copy images and rephrase or summarize text directly from the desktop, streamlining workflows and boosting productivity.

Click to Do provides contextual shortcuts to relevant actions like summarizing, rewriting, or simply copying any text or images you see on screen. (Image: Microsoft)

The second major improvement is an AI-enhanced Windows Search. With this update, users can search for files, apps, and system settings using natural language, making the process faster and more intuitive. The new search functionality improves key areas of the system, including the search panel, the Settings app, and File Explorer, aiming to create a more seamless and intelligent user experience.

These new features are already being distributed through the April 2025 preview update. Users who want early access should enable the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” option in the Windows Update settings. However, users in Europe will have to wait longer, as both Recall and Click To Do are scheduled for release there later in the year due to additional regulatory approvals.

15. Apple Could Be Planning Affordable Vision Pro And Smart Glasses Launch By 2026Пн, 28 апр[-/+]
Категория(?)  Автор(?)

Apple is continuing to expand its efforts in the extended reality (XR) market and plans to launch a more affordable version of its Vision Pro headset between late 2025 and early 2026, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Alongside this, the company is also actively developing its first smart glasses, signaling a broader push into wearable technology.

Since the debut of the Vision Pro, Apple has been seeking ways to make the device more accessible to a wider audience. The company’s strategy involves creating products that are lighter, more comfortable, and more affordable. Gurman reports that the upcoming version of the Vision Pro will be a lighter and less expensive model, designed for longer periods of comfortable wear.

To achieve this, Apple plans to use internal titanium frames while maintaining an aluminum exterior finish. This construction will not only enhance durability but also help visually differentiate the “Pro” model from the more mainstream variant. Rumors suggest that the new headset could be named “Apple Vision” or “Apple Vision Air.”

This more affordable model is intended to attract consumers who might find the current Vision Pro’s price and weight prohibitive, helping Apple build a larger user base before introducing a full second-generation Vision Pro. By broadening its XR ecosystem, Apple aims to strengthen its position in a growing yet still emerging market.

In parallel, Apple is also working on smart glasses, internally codenamed N50. Unlike the Vision Pro, these glasses are expected to function more like Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, incorporating AI features, environmental sensors, microphones, and speakers. However, the initial version of the smart glasses will reportedly not include augmented reality (AR) displays. Instead, they will focus on delivering contextual information through audio and AI-based interactions.

Although still in early development with no official release timeline, these glasses are seen as a potential introduction to “Apple Intelligence,” a concept centered around providing discreet, context-aware information to users. Apple is still considering whether the glasses will feature cameras for photography, balancing the desire for advanced functionality against privacy concerns.

Together, these initiatives suggest Apple is preparing a multi-tiered approach to wearable technology, offering both high-end immersive experiences and more subtle, everyday smart devices to meet a range of consumer needs.

16. Gmail Mobile Update Brings New Design, AI Features To Android and iOSВс, 27 апр[-/+]
Категория(?)  Автор(?)

Google is rolling out a series of updates to the Gmail mobile apps for Android and iOS, introducing new design changes and expanding access to AI-driven features aimed at enhancing usability and consistency across platforms.

For Android tablet and foldable device users, Gmail’s interface is becoming more flexible. A new adjustable slider allows users to drag and resize the list and conversation panes when using landscape orientation. This makes it easier to customize the layout depending on user preferences, whether for multitasking or focusing on a single task.

If desired, the divider can be moved completely to one side, switching the app to a single-pane view. This update is designed to provide greater control over the Gmail interface and is now rolling out to users with both Google Workspace accounts and personal accounts.

Meanwhile, Gmail for iOS is receiving a major design refresh with the introduction of Material Design 3. This update brings the app’s appearance in line with the Android and redesigned web versions of Gmail. Notable visual changes include pill-shaped navigation buttons at the bottom of the app and a rounded search bar at the top, contributing to a more modern and unified aesthetic. The update also ensures that Gmail looks and behaves consistently across platforms, enhancing the overall user experience. It is being deployed to both Workspace and personal Gmail users.

Additionally, Google Calendar for iOS is gaining new functionality. Users can now create and edit birthday events directly from the iOS app, a feature that was previously available only to Android users. This change helps maintain feature parity between the mobile versions of Google Calendar across operating systems.

On the AI front, Google is further integrating its Gemini technology into Gmail. The Gemini image generator will now be accessible from the Gmail sidebar on both Android and iOS devices for Workspace users. This tool enables users to generate images directly within the Gmail app, providing options to save them, copy them, or insert them into email drafts. This functionality mirrors the capabilities already available in Google’s Workspace apps on the web, offering more creative flexibility directly within mobile email workflows.

These updates reflect Google’s broader goal of unifying the Gmail experience across different devices, providing users with enhanced flexibility, a modernized interface, and more powerful AI tools to support communication and creativity on the go.

17. Snapdragon X Plus Could Bring Faster, More Powerful ChromebooksСб, 26 апр[-/+]
Категория(?)  Автор(?)

Developers are preparing ChromeOS updates to support Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X Plus chips, potentially leading to more powerful Chromebooks, according to Chrome Unboxed. A recent commit in the Chromium Gerrit code review reveals that the SoCID for the Qualcomm X1P42100—also known as Snapdragon X Plus—has been added to the repository, signaling active development of Chromebooks using this processor.

Although the Snapdragon X Plus is not Qualcomm’s flagship “Elite” processor, it offers notable performance, delivering 45 trillion operations per second (TOPS) of AI capability through its neural processing unit (NPU). This advancement suggests that upcoming Chromebooks could see significant improvements in AI-driven tasks and overall efficiency.

Historically, Qualcomm’s Arm-based Chromebooks have struggled with performance. The 2021 Acer Chromebook Spin 513, powered by the Snapdragon 7c, was praised for its battery life but criticized for slow performance. While the Snapdragon 7c Gen 2 offered slight improvements, it was not enough to close the performance gap.

Additionally, Qualcomm did not release the 7c Gen 3 for Chromebooks, which left manufacturers relying primarily on MediaTek and Intel processors. Intel chips, while powerful, have often been associated with less-than-ideal battery performance in Chromebooks.

The integration of Snapdragon X Plus chips could address these long-standing limitations, providing a balance of power efficiency and processing strength. This move could position Arm-powered Chromebooks as stronger competitors in a market where battery life and speed are increasingly important to users.

18. Google Messages Rolls Out On-Device Nudity Detection With Sensitive Content WarningsПт, 25 апр[-/+]
Категория(?)  Автор(?)

Google has introduced a new privacy-centric feature in its Messages app, aimed at shielding users from unexpected explicit images. The feature, called Sensitive Content Warnings, automatically detects and blurs images containing nudity before the recipient opens them. After months of internal testing and an originally planned February release, the feature is now appearing for a limited group of users in the beta version of Google Messages, according to a report by 9to5Google.

This tool is designed to enhance user safety and comfort, particularly when receiving unsolicited or inappropriate content. Once enabled, the feature serves as a protective layer by scanning incoming image content for nudity and applying a blur overlay when necessary. The process is entirely on-device, powered by Android’s SafetyCore, which means that no data or image content is uploaded to Google’s servers, maintaining complete user privacy. Moreover, it does not compromise the end-to-end encryption of RCS messages.

When an image is flagged, the recipient is given three options: view the image, block the sender, or learn more about the flag. If the user chooses to view the image, the app still offers the ability to reapply the blur later. This is particularly useful in scenarios where someone else might gain temporary access to the user’s phone. Additionally, the feature warns users when they attempt to send a potentially explicit image, encouraging them to consider the implications.

For adult users, Sensitive Content Warnings must be manually turned on in the app settings. However, for teen accounts (ages 13–17), the feature behaves differently. On supervised accounts—those managed through Google Family Link—the feature is enabled by default and cannot be disabled. Unsupervised teen users can toggle the feature on or off according to their preference.

It’s worth noting that the feature currently only applies to still images and functions exclusively within supported apps like Google Messages. Video content is not yet included.

This new rollout reflects Google’s broader effort to give users more control over their digital interactions while preserving privacy and security. By leveraging on-device processing and giving users flexible options, Google aims to create a safer, more respectful messaging experience for all users, especially in environments where unwanted content remains a concern.

Designed to combine comfort, sound quality, and seamless integration with Motorola and Android devices, the Moto Buds Loop provide a stylish audio solution for users who want to stay aware of their surroundings while enjoying music and calls. Motorola partnered with Bose for the sound and with Swarovski for a fashion-forward design. I love the Swarovski edition — it looks more like an elegant piece of jewelry than an electronic device.

Open-Ear Design and Fit

The Moto Buds Loop use an open-ear design, allowing ambient noise to pass through so that users can remain situationally aware. This makes them suitable for commuters, athletes, or anyone who prefers not to be completely isolated from their environment. The earbuds feature a lightweight frame and a secure, ergonomic fit designed for extended wear throughout the day.

Sound and Voice Features

Equipped with 12 mm ironless drivers, the earbuds aim to deliver high-quality sound with a balance of clarity and depth. They are tuned using Sound by Bose technology, a collaboration that enhances the earbuds’ ability to render detailed music playback and dialogue. In addition, spatial sound support adds dimension to movies and games.

For calls, the Moto Buds Loop feature a dual-microphone system enhanced with CrystalTalk AI. This system reduces ambient noise while isolating the speaker’s voice, for clear communication even in noisy environments like public transportation or busy streets.

23. Apple Watch Alerts Lead To Life-Saving Leukemia Diagnosis For NZ PsychiatristСр, 23 апр[-/+]
Категория(?)  Автор(?)

A Hawke’s Bay psychiatrist credits her Apple Watch with saving her life after the device repeatedly flagged abnormal health data. Dr. Faulkner, who has an extensive background in psychiatry and trauma care, began receiving daily alerts from her smartwatch, indicating unusual vital signs. Concerned by the persistent notifications, she visited her general practitioner and shared the smartwatch data, which clearly showed a concerning trend.

This prompt action led to urgent tests at Hastings Hospital, where within four hours, Dr. Faulkner was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia (AML), a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer. Medical professionals advised that without immediate attention, she could have succumbed to complications from the disease within days.

The following day, she was transferred to Palmerston North Hospital, where she remains under intensive treatment. Dr. Faulkner is undergoing chemotherapy and is scheduled for a stem cell transplant in July at Wellington Hospital. The transplant, which involves replacing her bone marrow with that of a European donor, carries significant risk, including a 20% chance of mortality. Despite this, she and her husband remain optimistic about her recovery, believing that the early warning from the Apple Watch significantly increased her chances of survival.

Apple Watch

The Apple Watch was credited for saving Dr. Faulkner’s life by flagging abnormal health data.

As a trained medical professional, Faulkner is well aware of the gravity of her diagnosis but is determined to return to her full life, including caring for the 64 patients on her waiting list. Her case highlights the potential life-saving benefits of wearable technology when used in conjunction with professional healthcare.

Apple has emphasized that the Watch’s heart and health-monitoring features, approved by the FDA in 2018, are intended as screening tools rather than diagnostic instruments. However, the medical community has increasingly recognized their potential. According to Apple’s Vice President of Health, Dr. Sumbul Desai, elevated heart rates detected by smartwatches can serve as early indicators for several health issues.

Ongoing research at the University of Auckland further supports this, with studies exploring how wearable data could predict asthma attacks and other conditions. Health informatics experts suggest that such technology may shift healthcare from a reactive to a proactive model.

Dr. Faulkner’s experience serves as a compelling example of how wearable technology, combined with timely medical care, can be a powerful tool in early diagnosis and potentially life-saving intervention.

25. AltStore Brings Nintendo Emulators To iPhone And iPad Through Alternative App StoreПн, 21 апр[-/+]
Категория(?)  Автор(?)

Following the European Union’s Digital Markets Act, which compels Apple to allow alternative app stores on iOS devices, platforms like AltStore have begun to expand their presence. Originally launched in 2019, AltStore previously required a jailbreak to install apps outside the App Store. Now, thanks to the EU’s regulatory changes, AltStore can be installed and used freely by iPhone and iPad users within the region.

This week, AltStore officially launched AltStore Classic, a modern re-release of the original version. The launch coincides with the one-year anniversary of AltStore PAL, the EU-specific variant. AltStore Classic distinguishes itself by allowing the installation of non-App Store apps, including those that require Just-in-Time (JIT) compilation, a feature generally restricted on iOS.

In conjunction with this release, the development team introduced StikDebug, a tool designed to enable JIT compilation for any app installed via AltStore Classic. This feature is particularly important for enabling game emulation, which relies heavily on JIT for performance.

To demonstrate the potential of these tools, AltStore developers showcased the functionality on Threads, highlighting the use of the Dolphin emulator, known for supporting Nintendo Wii and GameCube games. Additionally, a video demonstration of the meloNX emulator, which emulates Nintendo Switch games, was shared. In the video, Mario Kart gameplay is shown running fluidly on an iPhone, complete with responsive on-screen controls, indicating a high level of performance and stability.

These advancements are especially significant for users in the European Union, where alternative app stores are now officially supported. They provide users with far more flexibility and access to apps that Apple traditionally restricts. In other regions, such as Brazil, legal efforts are ongoing to push for similar regulatory changes. Lawsuits demanding the unlocking of the iOS ecosystem are currently in progress, and similar changes may soon reach those markets.

AltStore Classic and StikDebug represent a substantial shift in what is possible on iOS, enabling experiences like advanced gaming emulation without compromising device security. With the backing of EU legislation and a growing user base, AltStore is positioning itself as a leading solution for those seeking more open and customizable iOS experiences.

26. Grok Adds Memory Feature To Deliver More Personalized And Context-Aware ResponsesВс, 20 апр[-/+]
Категория(?)  Автор(?)

Grok, the artificial intelligence chatbot developed by xAI, is receiving a major update with the introduction of a memory feature. This new capability allows the AI model to retain and recall information from previous interactions with users, making its responses more personalized, context-aware, and relevant over time.

With this update, Grok joins the ranks of other leading AI platforms that already leverage memory to improve user experience, such as Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT. The memory feature enables Grok to remember specific details shared during earlier conversations—such as user preferences, frequently asked topics, or personal notes—and incorporate them into future responses. This allows users to engage in more natural, fluid conversations without having to repeat previously shared information.

The new memory system offers a distinct advantage for users who interact with Grok regularly. For example, a user can ask a question about a specific topic and return days later to continue the conversation where they left off. Grok will be able to recall the previous context and provide a follow-up response that builds on earlier information. This kind of continuity makes the chatbot more useful in complex or ongoing tasks, such as planning, learning, or long-term projects.

Grok now remembers your conversations. When you ask for recommendations or advice, you’ll get personalized responses. pic.twitter.com/UXhX7BjS57

— Grok (@grok) April 17, 2025

However, it is important to note that asking Grok to “forget” certain information does not automatically erase it. While users may request that the AI ignore specific inputs, the information is not necessarily deleted from memory unless explicitly removed through available tools or settings, which have not yet been detailed.

Currently, the memory feature is available in the beta version of Grok, accessible via its official website and mobile apps for Android and iOS. At this stage, the feature is not yet available in certain regions, including the European Union and the United Kingdom, likely due to regulatory considerations. xAI has also announced plans to extend the memory functionality to Grok’s integration with X (formerly Twitter) in the near future.

This development represents a key milestone in Grok’s evolution, as it enhances the AI’s ability to deliver smarter, more human-like interactions. By enabling memory, Grok moves closer to rivals like ChatGPT, offering a truly personalized digital assistant experience, strengthening its position in an increasingly competitive AI landscape.
