These speakers are designed to confine sound within centimeters of the user’s ear, enabling enhanced audio privacy while maintaining situational awareness.

During Upgrade 2024, NTT Sonority showcased two new audio innovations: a chair equipped with built-in speakers and the nwm MBH001 open-ear headphones. NTT Sonority showed its nwm MBH001 open-ear headphones at CES 2024, and I could try them on at Upgrade 2024. Using a technique similar to noise cancellation, the sound is contained within the headphones while allowing ambient noises to reach the wearer’s ears. I was impressed by the main feature that allows uninterrupted music listening while remaining aware of external sounds, eliminating the need to remove the headphones to engage in conversation. Additionally, the headphones ensure users’ privacy as the sound emitted by the nwm MBH001 cannot be heard by people nearby.

The NTT Sonority representative could not share any exact release date for the nwm MBH001 open-ear headphones, besides confirming they will launch later this year.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency ( SFMTA), responsible for the city’s Muni Metro light rail, has been utilizing a train control system reliant on 5¼-inch floppy disks since its installation in 1998. This system, known as the Automatic Train Control System (ATCS), facilitates the operation of trains in automatic mode while ensuring operator supervision. However, the agency is now poised to transition away from this outdated technology.

SFMTA officials have disclosed that the ATCS relies on three floppy disks loaded with crucial software each morning. The system involves various components, including onboard train computers, central and local servers, and communication infrastructure. The process involves connecting trains to the control system upon entering the subway, where they operate automatically, and reverting to manual operation upon exiting.

Acknowledging the system’s limitations and the increasing risk of data degradation and potential catastrophic failure, SFMTA initiated plans to overhaul the ATCS in 2018. The projected timeline for completion extends to 2029-2030 due to pandemic-related delays. Despite the current functionality of the floppy disk-based system, concerns persist regarding its sustainability and maintenance challenges. SFMTA acknowledges that the system has exceeded its expected lifespan and faces increasing difficulty in finding personnel proficient in outdated programming languages. The agency has emphasized the necessity of transitioning to a modernized control system to mitigate risks and ensure operational efficiency.

Furthermore, SFMTA reassures current staff of continued employment opportunities and plans to provide training in new technologies. Additionally, the transition is expected to create employment opportunities for skilled positions, such as signaling engineers, to support the implementation and maintenance of the new train control system.

During Upgrade 2024, NTT Corporation (NTT) and NTT DATA showcased the successful demonstration of All-Photonics Network (APN)-driven hyper-low-latency connections between data centers situated in the United States and the United Kingdom. In the U.K., NTT interconnected data centers located north and east of London through NTT’s Innovative Optical Wireless Network (IOWN) APN, achieving communication with a round-trip delay of less than 1 millisecond. Similarly, in the U.S., data centers in Northern Virginia attained comparable results. The main objective of NTT APN deployment is to have geographically dispersed IT infrastructure acting as a singular data center.

The data center market faces significant local challenges. Restrictions on carbon dioxide emissions and scarcity of land have made constructing data centers in urban areas difficult, leading operators to switch to suburban areas. However, with data centers spread over long distances, communication delay and high latency can become significant, making it a major roadblock to meeting customers’ demands for low latency.

During the experiment for proof of concept, NTT and NTT DATA interconnected data centers in the U.K. (HH2 in Hemel Hempstead and LON1 in Dagenham) and in the U.S. (VA1 and VA3 in Ashburn) using APN equipment from NEC. These U.K. and U.S. data centers are separated by distances of 89km and 4km, respectively. Measurements conducted over 100 Gbps and 400 Gbps links demonstrated that the two APN-connected data centers in the U.K. operated with less than 1 millisecond (approximately 0.9 milliseconds) of latency, with a delay variation of less than 0.1 microseconds. Comparatively, cloud connectivity provider Megaport states that the typical delay between data centers at a similar distance exceeds 2,000 microseconds (2 milliseconds).

In the U.S. scenario, the delay over the much shorter span was approximately 0.06 milliseconds, with a delay variation of less than 0.05 microseconds. By contrast, conventional networks employing general Layer 2 switches experience delay variation ranging from several microseconds to tens of microseconds. In essence, the APN reduces latency by half and jitter by orders of magnitude.

The APN is not just a technological advancement, but a solution that meets the needs of various industries. It delivers the extremely low latency necessary for current and emerging use cases, including distributed, real-time AI analysis (such as industrial IoT and predictive maintenance), smart surveillance systems, smart grid and energy management, and natural disaster detection and response, among others. NTT DATA is also conducting demonstrations in the financial sector, where low latency is crucial for remittances, settlements, and transactions. An additional advantage of the IOWN APN is its capability to activate lines simply by adding wavelengths, removing the need to install new dark fiber. It enables data center operators to respond to customer demand with the speed of light.

Texas is implementing artificial intelligence (AI) to grade the written portion of the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) exam, aiming to streamline the scoring process and potentially save the state millions of dollars annually. The revised exam, introduced in 2023, emphasizes open-ended questions over multiple-choice ones, resulting in significantly more constructed response items.

The transition to AI scoring is motivated by cost-saving measures, with the Texas Education Agency (TEA) estimating potential savings of up to $20 million per year compared to hiring human scorers from third-party contractors. While machines are not replacing human scorers entirely, the number of temporary scorers needed has drastically reduced, from around 6,000 to fewer than 2,000.

The AI scoring engine utilizes natural language processing to evaluate responses, having been trained on a dataset of 3,000 previously scored responses. Engineers initially trained the robots in computer simulations, focusing on two key skill sets: getting up from the ground and scoring goals against an opponent. Scientists at Northwestern University in Illinois, USA, have made a remarkable discovery that has left the scientific community astounded: evidence suggesting the existence of a massive body of water deep within the Earth’s interior, extending more than 400 miles beneath the surface. Published in 2014, the research paper titled “Dehydration melting at the top of the lower mantle” proposes the existence of a deep reservoir of water located between 250 and 410 miles underground.
