Former CEO of now bankrupt FTX cryptocurrency exchange faces more than 100 years in prison if given maximum penalty

Sam Bankman-Fried’s sentencing hearing has begun in Manhattan federal court before Judge Lewis Kaplan. Facing more than 100 years in prison, though prosecutors have asked for 40-50 and his own attorneys have asked for just six, he has been detained in Brooklyn since his trial in November. The former CEO is in the courthouse.

FTX imploded in November 2022 after Bankman-Fried and those in his inner circle comingled funds from the exchange with a closely associated hedge fund, Alameda Research. The result was Bankman-Fried and others using their customers’ money for their own personal ends. The illegal mixture created an $8bn budget shortfall that, when enough customers asked to withdraw their cryptocurrency, brought the exchange crashing down.

15. Two bodies recovered after Baltimore bridge collapse | First Thing14:35[-/+]
Категория(?)  Автор(?)

Four other construction workers who were on the Francis Scott Key Bridge when it collapsed this week still missing and are presumed dead. Plus: the cost of a burrito

Good morning.

The bodies of two men trapped in their vehicle have been recovered from the Patapsco River beneath the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which collapsed early on Tuesday when a container ship crashed into it.

What will be the economic impact of the crash? Buttigieg warned of “major and protracted impact to supply chains” after the closure of the Port of Baltimore for the foreseeable future. Baltimore is the ninth busiest port in the US, and the busiest for car shipments, handling at least 750,000 vehicles in 2023. “The economic impact that’s going to be felt by Baltimore and the state of Maryland is incomprehensible,” said Mary Kane, the president and CEO of the Maryland Chamber of Commerce.

Is there more information about the ship, the Dali? On Wednesday, investigators began collecting evidence from the Singaporean-flagged container ship, which had been heading for Sri Lanka. The ship was carrying 56 containers of hazardous materials including corrosives, flammables and lithium ion batteries, and some containers were breached in the crash, leaving a sheen on the water, but authorities deemed the ship stable and to pose no safety risk.

What are lawmakers doing? Lawmakers in Maryland have drafted an emergency bill to cover the salaries of workers who have been affected by the shutdown of the port. Meanwhile, Buttigieg has called for bipartisan support for federal funding to rebuild the bridge and reopen the port.

Now, as the Paris Olympics prepares to open this summer against a backdrop of war from Ukraine to the Middle East – with Emmanuel Macron saying Russia will be asked to observe a ceasefire in Ukraine during the Games – a new exhibition in Paris takes an unflinching look at the social and geopolitical impact of the Games over the last century.

Haiti has erupted into violence after gangs laid waste to the capital and forced the prime minister to resign. But Haitians are wary from bitter experience of outside forces intervening to find a solution to the crisis

A few weeks ago, two of the main criminal gangs in Haiti joined forces, staging a full-scale insurrection while the prime minister, Ariel Henry, was travelling abroad. Thousands of gang members took over government buildings, police stations and hospitals and broke into prisons, where they released thousands more gang members into their ranks. Before long, it was clear that the Haitian government and the police had lost control of the capital, Port-au-Prince.

Widlore Merancourt, the editor-in-chief of Haiti’s Ayibo Post, tells Michael Safi that for the first time he fears for his life while reporting from Port-au-Prince, such is the violent chaos there.

Attacks around Rafah come despite growing pressure for ceasefire. This live blog is closed

The UK is facing legal action over its pause in funding for Unrwa, after Israel’s allegations that 12 staff at the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees were involved in the 7 October attacks against Israel.

London-based law firm Bindmans has sent a pre-action letter, the first stage in a legal claim, on behalf of a British-Palestinian man whose family are in Gaza and reliant on humanitarian aid provided by Unwra.

The UK government’s strategy for international development sets out four priorities, including to: ‘provide life-saving humanitarian assistance and work to prevent the worst forms of human suffering’.

Given the catastrophic situation in Gaza, including an impending, man-made famine, the ongoing decision to cease funding to Unwra is not only morally wrong but flies in the face of that strategy.”

The government knows that Unwra is the only effective means to deliver humanitarian aid, and it ought to know that it hasn’t given sufficient reason on how, or why, it decided to cut funding.”

Ministers under growing pressure to act amid signs Israel intends to ignore UN ceasefire resolution

Parliamentary pressure is building on the UK government to ban arms sales to Israel, amid signs that Israel intends to ignore the UN security council resolution passed this week calling on all sides to commit to a ceasefire.

A letter signed by more than 130 parliamentarians to the foreign secretary, David Cameron, highlights action taken by other countries, most recently Canada, which last week announced it would halt all arms exports to Israel.

A nappy manufacturer in Japan is to stop making the products for babies and instead raise production of adult diapers, in a reflection of the country’s rapidly ageing society.

Oji Holdings, which specialises in paper products, said it would stop making children’s nappies in September amid a sharp decline in demand. The firm has seen sales drop from a peak of about 700m in 2001 to 400m today.

Palestinian authorities say deaths resulted from attempts to recover crates that fell in water after parachutes went wrong

Twelve people drowned trying to get to aid dropped by plane off a Gaza beach, Palestinian health authorities have said, amid growing fears of famine nearly six months into Israel’s military campaign.

Video of the airdrop on Monday showed crowds of people running towards the beach, in Beit Lahiya in north Gaza, as crates with parachutes floated down, then people standing deep in water and bodies being pulled on to the sand.

South American neighbours respond to blocking of Corina Yoris, who was favoured to beat strongman Nicolas Maduro in elections

A chorus of Latin American nations, including Brazil and Colombia, have voiced concern over the deteriorating political situation in Venezuela after the opposition politician best-positioned to challenge its strongman leader, Nicolas Maduro, in July’s presidential election was prevented from registering for the vote.

Corina Yoris, an 80-year-old philosopher, was little-known outside academic circles until last Friday, when she was catapulted on to the frontline of Venezuela’s long-running political crisis by being named as the substitute for Maria Corina Machado, a prominent opposition figure who had been banned from running in the election.

The Jamaican government has joined widespread condemnation of comments by the Conservative’s party’s biggest donor, Frank Hester, amid concerns about a contract it signed with his digital health company.

Earlier in March, the Guardian revealed that during a meeting in 2019 Hester had said Diane Abbott, Britain’s first black female MP, made you “want to hate all black women” and that she “should be shot”, remarks that are now subject of an investigation by West Yorkshire police.

Limited details have emerged about background of Muhammadsobir Fayzov and three other Tajik men accused of carrying out atrocity

Former colleagues and clients at the small barber shop where Muhammadsobir Fayzov once worked were stunned when they saw the news.

They knew the 19-year-old as a promising, hard-working stylist, and saw no signs that he and three other Tajik gunmen would be accused of committing last Friday’s bloodbath at a concert city hall in Moscow.

Authorities are now mandating that climbers remove their waste from the mountain using biodegradable bags

It’s one of the more unedifying challenges involved in scaling to the highest point on Earth – how best to relieve oneself in the freezing, inhospitable environment of Mount Everest.

That question is about to become slightly more complicated as climbers prepare for a change in protocol when the season gets under way next month, with a new rule about removing their own faeces as they trek up and down the mountain.
